Alpenglow

When the sun is just below the horizon, a horizontal red glowing band can sometimes be observed on the opposite horizon. Alpenglow is easiest to observe when mountains are illuminated but can also be observed when the sky is illuminated through backscattering, according to Wikipedia. 

This is at Devil's Thumb Resort where I stayed in Colorado.  I was fascinated with the pink light cast back on the mountains after the sun had set.

Evening Attire

My destination was further away, and took longer to get to than I expected. I had been looking down at where I would step next as I crossed the field.  When I looked up the sky was wearing evening attire the color of ripe mangoes.  

Another sky painting for the collection. I tried not to make this one too soft.  Edges on clouds present a different atmosphere. I had to concentrate on leaving them.  I'm a soft cloud person.

Path to Dehlias's"

I had walked it so many times it didn't even occur to me to wonder why the path zigged and zagged through the meadow on the way to Dehlia's, until Lindy brought it up. I looked behind us and ahead again, then shrugged it off as one of those questions to which I would have to invent an answer. 

After painting Peg's Front Garden I was inspired to try another quick landscape using acrylic and my imagination. Purely a fantasy, this one.

Untitled

When the results came back, I asked to see the image.  It was black and shades of gray and white. I liked the patterns and I imagined the actual internal color of my breast.  I decided to paint my perfectly normal mammogram. That's my nipple on the right, by the way.  Just the way you envisioned it, right? 

 I painted this with acrylics and accented it with interference paint, so it has a metallic shimmer when seen in the right light. And the title... well, the word "Untitled" contains the word tit, so I thought it would be appropriate.

Peg's Front Garden

In June, when the larkspur are blooming, that's when I enjoy painting in Peg's front garden. There's no rhyme or reason to this garden, as things reseed where they wish, but Peg keeps it weeded and walkways clear... enough. 

I use acrylics when I paint outdoors, and usually a palette knife, but this one was done with a brush.

Frosty Morning

It was November.  Frost had chilled autumn's remaining foliage with her prickling needles. Then Morning showed up with her heat lamp to thaw Frost's crystalline web.  

Morning skies are so much more interesting than the ones we see at noon.  I'm enjoying morning a lot more now that I am painting sky without fear.

Canadian Sunset

Where I live the sunrise and sunset are blocked by buildings and trees. My memory serves me in the area of these daily occurrences, and when I can, I photograph particularly stunning sunsets for reference.  This one is a recollection of one summer when I was in Canada at sunset. I loved how the primary colors reflected on the water, and how the trees, in the absence of light turned black.  I remember saying, "Good night Canada, I loved today." 


I painted this in twenty minutes.  I love these little sky studies.

Country Rose

She parted her dewy petals like the lips of lovers when they kiss, to cherish the warmth of that summer morning. She welcomed the sky reflections on her petticoats and the sunshine on her camisole. 


I painted Country Rose once before, and donated her to a fundraiser for a women's shelter.  She was such fun to paint, I wanted to experience it again.  Enjoy my Country Rose.

Good Morning

"Good morning my love, come see the sunrise. I'm glad you're waking up to watch it with me.  I wasn't going to waken you, but now that you're... honey?  My darling?  It's okay, we can watch the sunset tonight, instead." 


I enjoy making these small sky paintings.  They give me satisfaction and joy to be able to produce them from passion within.

Silver and Gold

I was feeling the stress of the week so I got out my joint compound and a trowel.  I drizzled acrylic onto the white plaster and spread it on the canvas with the blade. Cool blue to earthen brown it went. Then to add some spice to the mix, I applied gold leaf and some silver leaf that I had leftover from a mural painting job.  It's not my usual fare, but I'm in the midst of painting house portraits again and needed to paint something different.

Peg's Garden Shed

It may have been the humidity that created the swarthy atmosphere the morning I stood in the shade painting Peg's garden shed.  Or it could have been my contacts. I realized after I photographed it and scraped the image off the canvas that two months had passed since I changed my contact lenses.  

This painting exists in this space only. There are days when what goes down, wipes off as easily.

Pink Jolie

When an act of kindness touches one's life it seems appropriate to acknowledge it in the sincerest way possible.  The photo for this hot pink zinnia was "loaned" to me by a new friend.  "Jolie" is French for pretty, not joy as I reported earlier. Pink Joie will run at another time!    

I'm thrilled to be painting large format images where I can use my sponges to apply glazes of color. This process also brings me joy... for making it "pretty."

Salton Sea

Google Maps makes it possible to explore places from the air I never saw while piloting myself.  Now I enjoy exploring the country's topographical features from the comfort of my computer.  Southern California has the largest inland sea, at the lowest altitude on earth.  It formed back in 1905 when the Colorado River flooded.  Here is my take on the phenomenon.
