Peg's Front Garden

"Peg's Front Garden"
8" x 10"
Acrylic on canvas panel
In June, when the larkspur are blooming, that's when I enjoy painting in Peg's front garden. There's no rhyme or reason to this garden, as things reseed where they wish, but Peg keeps it weeded and walkways clear... enough.

I use acrylics when I paint outdoors, and usually a palette knife, but this one was done with a brush.

Gossamer Trio

"Gossamer Trio"
11" x 14"
Acrylic on canvas panel
There were three sheer, papery roses mixed in with some carnations and a tulip when I rescued the bouquet.  I snipped 'em short, added foliage and buds, and a few herbs from my garden then painted the gossamer trio before they wilted.

The colors were perfect for this background.  I worked it fast and deliberately, adding a retarder to the paint, so it wouldn't dry too quickly.  I especially like the blue flowers and leaves tucked between the three gals.

Thanks for taking a look!

Angel Blueface

"Angel Blueface"
"6" x6"
Acrylic on clay board
As soon as I was ready to shoot this stand of fan coral, an Angel Blueface darted in front of my specimens. Wouldn't you know, a simple project of making marks turned—all about fish!

Okay, here's the panel I chose to imprint with the mark made by paint squeezed on a wet background and pressed with a firm piece of plastic, then lifted.  I could see through the plastic this time, so I relocated the paint to the height and area I wanted.  It looked like fan coral to me. So I made a miniature under water scene with pearlescent and gold coral.  Then it needed a fish.  I went to the internet and found this guy, then put one more little fan in front of him.  Thus ends this  experiment in making meaningful marks.

Thank you for bearing with me on this excursion.

Light in the Woods

"Light in the Woods"
8" x 8"
Acrylic on panel
When the light peeked between the tree trunks at this bend in the stream, it was time to wrap it up for the day. The hike back to the road would use up the rest of my daylight.

Actually, I didn't stand anywhere near this lovely place to paint it. It is, in fact another attempt at using a palette knife, while looking at a photo.  There's a composition similar to this by Linda Wilder, so I can't take credit for the place, but I did paint this with my own colors and my own take on it.

This one is not for sale.  It was just for practice, but I thought you'd enjoy seeing it.

Garden Flowers

"Garden Flowers"
9" x 12"
Acrylic on canvas panel
It had been sunny when I found this cluster of flowers. I sculpted merrily, oblivious to what was coming in from the west. The air became still, and a canopy of dark hastened my final scrapings.

Knife painting has taught me a lot about happenstance.  I'm thinking of it as an "indication" medium. No details, just indications.

This painting can be seen on, and for purchase through a Dailypaintworks
Auction.

Brookside Garden

"Brookside Garden"
9" x 12"
Acrylic on canvas panel

It was hot, bright and and I was wilting, but the flowers beside the brook in this garden were getting what they needed.

This series was all done en plein air with a palette knife and acrylic paint. For me the combination of sunlight, plastic paint, and the crustiness that builds on a rigid surface like canvas board, was exactly how I wanted my outdoor paintings to look.

This painting is listed with, and for sale through a Dailypaintworks Auction.

Thanks for stopping by.

Spring Stuff

"Spring Stuff"
24" x 24"
Acrylic on wrapped canvas
I was a faux finisher and muralist for many years.  When that phase of my life came to an end, I missed it.  This piece pays homage to a lot of years learning how to manage enormous expanses of wall with a degree of expertise.

This piece is sold, but lives on in my heart.  And before it left for its new home I added a third egg to the nest. However, I did not get a photo of that addition.

This painting will be shown on Daily Paintworks, but it is not for sale.  That would be silly.

Thanks for visiting my nest today.

Intrinsic

"Intrinsic"
12" x 36"
Acarylic on wrapped canvas
Not so long ago, nor that far away, a smidge of blue collided with a skosh of yellow. Red crept in from a corner and wrinkled, stretched, and cosmically diverged into a unique realm.  "Intrinsic" was born.

I bought a variety of canvases in unusual sizes. This one just begged to be cosmic in nature. I used my acrylics with a few watecolor techniques and finished with colored pencil details. Wow, this one was fun!

This painting is listed with, and for sale through a Daily Paintworks Auction. Or via Paypal on that site.
